Frequently Asked Questions

Services & Care

What pets do you care for?

We care for dogs & cats. We do not treat large animals (horses, cattle, etc.) or exotic animals (lizards, birds, hamsters, etc.).

Are you open on the weekends?

No, we are open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 6:00pm.

Will you keep my pet overnight?

No, we are not an overnight facility. Should your veterinarian recommend that your pet receive overnight care, we will work with the overnight or 24-hour facility closest to you to facilitate the transfer of your pet. The owner will be responsible for the transportation of their pet from our facility to the overnight facility chosen.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Call us at 540-832-1751 to schedule. We currently do not offer online scheduling options.

Do you offer boarding services?

No, we do not offer boarding services. Ask our front desk team for a list of boarders in the area that our clients have worked with.

Do you offer grooming services?

No, we do not offer grooming services like baths, haircuts, anal gland expression, and nail trims. We do, however, offer sanitary trims and de-matting haircuts for pets with medical need, and anal gland expression and nail trims for pets who require anti-anxiety or mild sedation medications in order to have the procedure done. Please talk to your doctor about these services if you think that your pet applies.

Do you provide estimates before treatment?

Yes. All surgeries and admitted appointments require a signed treatment plan prior to treatment. For all emergency cases we will provide a written or verbal treatment plan before performing non-emergent procedures once we have examined your pet and reviewed what is needed. If costs unexpectedly increase at any time, (e.g. complications, additional medications) we will call you before proceeding whenever possible.

What payment options do you offer?

We accept credit & debit cards, cash, and CareCredit. We work with many pet insurance companies and are happy to accommodate anything our clients need to file a claim; pet insurances typically reimburse the owner after initial payment goes to the hospital. We do not accept checks.

Preventative Care & Wellness

How often should my pet have wellness exams/checkups?

For most dogs and cats 1 year of age or older, we recommend annual wellness exams. For senior pets, 10 years of age or older, we recommend checkups every 6 months with more frequent lab work to monitor for age-related diseases.

Why do you recommend flea, tick, and heartworm prevention?

Because Central Virginia has mosquitoes, ticks, and parasites year-round, preventative measures are incredibly important for your pets whether they are indoor or outdoor. We recommend keeping your pet up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention to avoid costly and painful flea infestations, tick-borne illnesses, and heartworm infection.

Surgery & Procedures

How do I prepare my pet for surgery?

Preparation typically includes fasting, meaning not giving any food after 8:00pm the night before the surgery and restricting water. We also require a Surgical and General Anesthesia Consent Form and Treatment Plan be reviewed and signed by the owner prior to your pet being admitted for the procedure.

Will my pet be in pain after surgery, and what pain management is used?

Yes, it’s expected that your pet will experience at least some discomfort post-procedure. We provide pain relief in various ways to ensure your pet heals as easily as possible, including but not limited to injectable pain medications, oral medications, or other supportive care. We also monitor pets carefully before, during, and after surgery for signs of pain and edit their treatment as needed.

My pet is having a dental procedure done, will they be able to eat normally?

We advise owners to feed their pets approximately 1/3 of their normal food portion, dry or wet, the night after a dental procedure. It is typical for a pet to enjoy their regular food for the duration of their life, regardless of getting teeth extracted.

Medications

Do you have an online pharmacy or refill service?

Yes, we have an online pharmacy where you can both request medications and our veterinarians can prescribe for you.

If I want to use another online pharmacy, what do I do?

If you are at an appointment, let our team know that you would like a written prescription to mail to another online pharmacy. We will print your prescription for you to take home and put in the mail. If you are not in appointment, please call our office to create a written for you to pick up at our front desk at your convenience. Please allow for about a 2 week waiting period for this to be authorized by the online pharmacy.
